You can utilize the Manumission Project’s database to browse or search for primary source manumission documents for Virginia County. Type a search term into the search bar (with a blue magnifying glass) in the upper right hand side of the page. You may enter a name, a location, a date, or desired keyword. The search will draw from both document metadata as well as the text of the document transcriptions.

Browse manumission documents grouped by county by selecting “Browse Collections” or view the most recently added documents by selecting “Browse Items.” View our Resource Page to find links to useful manumission related resources, articles, and books. View Notable Manumissions to find manumissions by well-known individuals and manumissions of large numbers of individuals.
